Can anyone on here tell me what to do about raccoons?

I heard a loud noise on the deck and a large raccon was on top of my trash can. It ran when I turned the light on and hollered at it, but since I live next to a woods I think it might return. Is there a cheap, simple way to get rid of raccoons? Thanks ahead of time.
