Can spirits completely hold u down where u feel like u cant move or speak?

My husband and i are staying at his parents house and his brother committed suicide 2 yrs ago, he hung himself in the back yard. My husband was sleeping in his bed last night and me and my daughter were in the room next to him. He woke up around three am and couldn't move off the bed, like something was holding him down, and when he tried to holler for help he said it sounded like someone had their hand over his mouth. but when he finally could get up when he walked out of the room he said he seem a shadow standing inside my bedroom door.
